You are invited to join us for the Lay Servant Ministries Academy to begin or continue training for living out the call to make disciples for the transformation of our churches, communities, and world.  We will be offering a few classes that we have not had in awhile. Please see below for the list of classes being offered. These are in person classes. The Heritage class is also being offered by Zoom (see the description below for the schedule). You can only choose one class.

Cancellation policy:  cancellations must be received via email to lisa.timmerman@inumc.org by 11:59 pm (ET) on February 1, 2024  to be eligible for a refund less processing fee.  No refunds after this date.

Classes:

  • Introduction to Lay Ministry: The BASIC Course: This course is required for those seeking to become a Certified Lay Servant, a Certified Lay Speaker, or a Certified Lay Minister. This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries. Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended. The instructor will be Mike Grib. Books will be provided at the first class.
  • Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts: Understand your gifts and how the church can use them to fulfill its mission and ministry. Learn what it means to be a spiritual leader. This class requires that you have taken The BASIC Course, first. The instructor will be Peg Tenhave, CLS. Books will be provided at the first class.
  • Heritage - Living Our United Methodist Beliefs (in person): Explore the special gifts of theology, witness, and organization of the UMC. Learn how we got where we are today, and how the UMC is still needed in the 21st century church. This class requires that you have taken The BASIC Course, first. The instructor will be Tom Clark. Books will be provided at the first class.
  • Heritage class via Zoom: The Heritage class above is also being offered via Zoom. This is the only class offered via Zoom. You will need to purchase the book, Living Our Beliefs by Ken Carder; available at www.amazon.com for $13.00 and in Kindle format for $9.99. The instructor will be Pastor Mike Settles. The four Zoom sessions will be held: 2/3 - 9:00 am to 11:45 am (ET); 2/10 - 2:00 pm to 4:45 pm (ET); 2/17 - 9:00 am to 11:45 am (ET); 2/24 - 9:00 am to 11:45 am (ET). Attendance is optional at the in-person Consecration Service on 3/2 - 11:45 am to 12:30 pm (ET).
  • Soul Reset: Relearn the rhythms of grace through daily life with God. Find rest in the healing nearness of Jesus Christ in the midst of anxiety, busyness, and life. This class requires that you have taken The BASIC Course, first. The instructor will be Pastor Tracy Rose-Love. Books will be provided at the first class.
  • Preaching I - Called to Preach: Begin to learn tools to create faithful, engaging sermons and learn skills to gain comfort in public speaking. This class requires that you have taken The BASIC Course, first. This class has a maximum class size of 8 students. The instructor will be Pastor Vickie VanNevel. Books will be provided at the first class.
