You are invited to join us for the Lay Servant Ministries Academy to begin or continue training for living out the call to make disciples for the transformation of our churches, communities, and world. 

This is a one day in person Lay Servant Academy.  Participants are expected to have obtained the required class book and to have read it prior to the class.

Cost:  $25.00 per person

Classes offered:

  • Introduction to Lay Ministry:  The BASIC Course - This course is required for those seeking to become a Certified Lay Servant, a Certified Lay Speaker, or a Certified Lay Minister.  This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries.  Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship.  The instructor is Pastor Branden Scott, Certified Lay Speaker.  The required text is: Lay Servant Ministries-Basic Course by Sandy Zeigler Jackson and Brian Jackson.  It is available through Amazon for $11.00 and in Kindle version.  Participants are required to read the book prior to the class.
  • Leading Worship: This course is required for those seeking to become Certified Lay Speakers.  For United Methodists, worship is formative and can revitalize people’s lives.  This course focuses on the ministry of the lay servant who either regularly or occasionally leads a group or congregation in worship.  The instructor is the Rev. Dr. Brian Cook.  The required text is: Worshiping with United Methodists by Hoyt l. Hickman, revised edition.  It is available through Amazon for $14.39 or in Kindle version for $9.99.  Participants are required to read the book prior to the class.   
  • Accountable Discipleship: This course focuses on the concept of the household of God, Scripture as divine revelation, Wesleyan understandings of grace and the importance of class leaders in the development of the Methodist movement.  Accountable discipleship is how disciples of Jesus Christ live in God’s household.  It is the living of God’s household rules in their daily lives.  The instructor is Pastor Joel Troxell, Associate Director of Leadership Development for the INUMC.  The required text is:  Accountable Discipleship: Living in God’s Household by Steven W. Manskar, available on Amazon for $15.00.  Participants are required to read the book prior to the class.
