Classes offered:

  • Introduction to Lay Ministry:  The BASIC Course:  This course is required for those seeking to a become Certified Lay Servant, a Certified Lay Speaker, or a Certified Lay Minister.  This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries.  Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining rooted in consistent spiritual practices, and being part of a group that holds members accountable in their discipleship.  The instructor will be Rev. Dr. Brian Cooper.  The required text is:  Lay Servant Ministries-Basic Course by Sandy Zeigler Jackson and Brian Jackson.  It is available through Amazon for $11.00 and in Kindle version.  Participants are required to read the book prior to the class.
  • For the Common Good:  Discovering and Using Your Spiritual Gifts:  This course meets the Spiritual Gifts requirement for those who are seeking to become Certified Lay Speakers.  This course offers a scriptural understanding of spiritual gifts as always given “for the common good”.  By helping participants identify and link their gifts, abilities, and sense of calling, laity will learn the powerful connection between spiritual gifts and vocational discernment in the context of the mission of their local church.  They will also learn how to make spiritual gifts discernment a part of their congregation’s culture and commitment to equip mission-focused leaders who make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.  The instructor will be Rev. Jean Brindel.  The required text is For the Common Good:  Discovering and Using Your Spiritual Gifts by Christine Harman.  It is available through Amazon for $13.49 and in Kindle version.  Participants are required to read the book prior to the class.
  • Teaching Biblical Faith:  Leading Small Group Bible Studies:  This is an advanced course.  Biblical faith is a lens for viewing life and this course will give participants 10 tried and true strategies for leading small group Bible studies.  It will illustrate how the reading of scripture is a resource for ongoing theological reflection connecting experience, vocation, daily life, and faith with the goal to help congregations respond faithfully to the Biblical witness and cultivate a whole congregation approach to Bible study.The required text is:  Teaching Biblical Faith:  Leading Small Group Bible Studies by Jack L. Seymour.  It is available through Amazon for $10.99 and in Kindle version.  Participants are required to read the text prior to the class.  Kimberly Arnott, CLM will be the instructor.
